Newsletter Spring 2015

Welcome to our spring newsletter bringing you news of what’s happening here at Hazeldene House.

New Family Coordinator

Sandie Peters has taken on the new role of Family Coordinator to help our residents maintain those all-important links with their families. Sandie is getting to know each resident’s family and friends and then creating individual events such as birthday celebrations, anniversaries and even “moving-in” parties, all with the family’s involvement.

We’re keen for even the youngest family members to feel part of our community here. Sandie and our social assistants recently organised an Easter egg hunt in the garden with 30 grandchildren and great grandchildren helping our residents hunt for chocolate eggs! We raffled a giant Thornton’s Easter egg and raised £230 in aid of the local Age UK who use our Day Centre.

Dementia Support Group

In our April meeting we were joined by Claire Gainsford, Community Heathcare Worker from Highlands House, our local community mental health team. Contact me for details of our next meeting.
Claire will also be using our Day Centre to host a post-diagnosis support group for people with mental health issues. For details see Highlands House.

Community Links

Every Saturday for the last few months a small group of local sixth formers have been visiting residents and sharing activities that residents enjoy including puzzles, crafting and Airfix modeling. It has been wonderful to see relationships develop between the young people and our residents, both are benefitting from getting to know people of another generation.

Care Home Open Day

We are hoping for a sunny day on Friday 19 June to unveil our new outdoor children’s play area and residents’ patio garden as part of our activities for Care Home Open Day. There’ll also be refreshments, craft stalls and guided tours of our home. All are welcome to come along.

Graham Care Awards 2015

Last year we received so many warm and moving testimonies it was very difficult to choose just one winner, so this year we will be celebrating the achievements of three winning members of staff! Nomination forms are available now so do ask me for one. Our Awards ceremony will take place on 13 November. You can see photos and videos of our 2014 Awards ceremony here on our website.

News in Brief

  • A Relative’s Hand Book is being produced by a group of Hazeldene House relatives and it will ready later this month.
  • Coming soon – we’ll be using Skype to keep residents in contact with family abroad. We’ll also be setting up a hobby club with the help of volunteers, for example ‘knit and natter’ – we are open to suggestions!
  • Our social assistants on each floor are running weekly coffee mornings for residents and their families. If you’d like to come along speak to Caroline, Emma or Sarah for dates and times.
  • Father’s Day – our gentlemen residents will be inviting their families for a cheese and wine evening. The date is still to be arranged so please check posters in reception or ask me.
